Sad news — Jim Gorton has passed

It is with heavy hearts that we report the passing of long-time SCC member Jim Gorton.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to Janet and the whole Gorton family.  The following is copied from The Batavian: James E. Gorton Jr. 64, of Bonita Springs, FL and Silver Lake, NY died most unexpectedly on May 8, 2017. Jim was born February 19, 1953 to the late James Sr. and Doris Davis Gorton. Jim is survived by his loving wife, Judith Martin Gorton. He also leaves behind his beloved children, Christopher (John) and Jeffrey. He is also survived by his bereaved sisters, Lynn Gorton, Ann Schneider, Kathryn (Buddy) Houseknecht and Martha (Grant) Newton; his adored grandsons, Satcher, Trice and Mason; nephew, Matt Schneider; nieces, Megan and Ella Houseknecht, Sadie Newton and Sierra Rocili; sisters-in-law, Jane Rhode and Janet (Scott) Voss; 1st wife, Janet Gorton; and of course, his treasured Bassett Hound, Billy. Jim was a 1971 graduate of Batavia High School. He earned a baccalaureate degree from Bowling Green State University and a law degree from the University of San Diego. Jim practiced law for 40 years primarily in Anchorage, Alaska. He was well respected for his grasp of the law and compassion for his clients. In addition to his accomplishments in the legal profession, Jim loved to play golf, boat and work in his yard. Jim will live in the hearts of everyone who knew him. His devotion to his family will be truly missed. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Friday, May 12, 2017 at 4:00 pm at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, Bonita Springs, Florida. As an expression of sympathy, in lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions made in Jim’s memory to: Alaska Chapter of the Innocence Project, Box 201656, Anchorage, Alaska 99520 or Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Venice in Florida in support to the St. Leo’s after school and Summer Positive Youth Development programs, 1000 Pinebrook Rd., Venice, Florida 34285. Memorial Day Cookout — bring the kids and grandkids!

This year, for our Memorial Day Cookout, we will be focusing on our youngest members, so bring the kids and grand kids for a fun afternoon at Stafford Country Club. Come watch the Kentucky Derby at SCC

Even though the tournament has been postponed, the clubhouse will still be open for normal dining service on Saturday. To celebrate the derby, we will have light hors d'oeuvres as well as drink specials available in the clubhouse beginning at 5:30 pm. Derby Day and Member/Member tourneys rescheduled

Due to the recent and forecast inclement weather, and the strong possibility of riding carts not being allowed on Saturday, May 6th, Derby Day festivities are being rescheduled to May 20th... and will coincide with the Preakness Race.  All activities planned for Derby Day will be included for Preakness Day.  If you are signed up for Derby Day, there is no need to re-signup. If you are signed up but cannot make it for the Preakness on May 20th, please let Eric know (343-9281).  And, of course, if you weren't available for Derby Day on May 6th, but you are available to play in Preakness Day on May 20th, contact the Golf Shop to sign up. The Clubhouse will be open on Saturday, May 6th for lunch and dinner and you are still encouraged to come join us to watch the Kentucky Derby. To allow for Derby Day to be switched to Preakness Day, the Member/Member tourney that was scheduled for May 20th will now be played on May 27th.  Similar to the Derby Day change, if you are signed up for the Member/Member there is no need to re-signup.  If you are signed up but cannot play on May 27th, please let Eric...
